In the year 1823, at the height of the British Empire and the colonization of Australia, Pat Roche sits on board a convict ship, sentenced for the term of his natural life to the New Colonies. All hope of ever seeing his wife and child again appeared to be lost. The ship is a fraught with tension under such a strict military guard; with one hundred and fifty criminals confined to a small space, it can only mean trouble. By the time the ship arrives at Van Dieman’s Land, there will be fighting, flogging, rape, murder and mutiny. Pat Roche will find himself involved in it all.
Sarah Roche has now been shunned by the local community and is struggling to fend for herself and her little boy. There is a terrible turn of events and she is soon to follow in her husband’s footsteps. So too will a desperate voyage begin for her on board the female convict ship, otherwise known as ‘Floating Brothels’. She arrives in Hobart a broken woman, only regaining her strength after a fleeting moment with her husband. Pat is being taken away to a place of unbearable torment; the notorious Sarah Island settlement, where escape is punishable by death.
Many colourful characters weave their way through the pages, creating a plot intertwined with deceit, retribution, murder, tragedy and enduring love, resulting in a heart wrenching climax.

The author clearly did his homework on this and then used that knowledge to bring us along on the journey with characters that are believable and who we come to love and root for. As others have noted, the book provides an 'insider's' view of who and why England sent their cast-offs to Australia in the 1800's. The portrayal of life in England for the under-privileged is brutal but gripping. The reader admires the ability of the main character to overcome such a childhood, and the impact that just a few souls who care can have on a single life. The young romance that falters but blossoms despite family resistance makes it all the more sweet.Then, the horrors of being falsely accused without representation, and deported to Australia's 'penitentiary' and probable death sweep the reader deeper into the personal saga. The harrowing boat journey, the unlikely friendships that develop with other 'inmates', and life being stuck in the penal system Aussie-style is gripping. Throughout it all, we develop a strong empathy for the main characters, their undying devotion, loyalty and love, and sit in awe that they can even continue to persevere.
Richly written and vividly portrayed - curling up with this book became a highlight of my day - but alas the story came to it's wonderful conclusion. Thank you Craig Brennan for bringing us into this important time in history, and letting us experience it. I'm especially grateful that I could do it from the warm comfort and safety of my reading chair. Kudos!

I very much enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to others to do so too. Even though there was so much sadness within it, there is also life, and a view of how life may very well have been in those times. I found it hard to put down at night as I awaited the next sad event in their lives, yet my heart hurt when bad things and injustices occurred.
Well done and thank you for writing such a good read.
this was a great book. It kept me interested all the way through it. Sad in parts, but it also made it so real as I guess this was what it was like for these people who were transported. Once I started reading it I couldnt put it down, and look forward to reading another one of his books
As a Tasmanian with 2 convicts as my Ancestors this book had me captivated. I thought I knew a fair bit about the lives that they lived through the many books I had already read, how wrong I was! Having always been so grateful for them in helping create such a fine place for their Descendents to enjoy and live out their days. Bound to Sarah took me to a place I could never have imagined, being left speechless. The Author did a beautiful job with his writing and I thank him for sharing this story and of Sarah Island. Compelling reading if you are interested in history.
Pretty sad story and innocent people caught up in misfortune. Very clear story of what happens to to innocent people along with the guilty one's.
This book is a very well researched novel on a subject you just don't see much about. The simplest errors or misunderstandings sent many Brits as convicts to what is now Australia. The author did a great job of vividly describing it all life on the transport ships, on the island, the subsequent escapes. Lots of adjectives could be used to describe the story gruesome, terrifying, unbelievable, heartfelt, to name a few. There were a few too many coincidences toward the end but they didn't distract from the overall story. Personally, I didn't care for the ending, but it was to be expected after what had occurred throughout their lives.
Book had a lot of harsh,unbelievable parts about early days of the Convict Ships & Van Diem's land.
The characters were amazing & very believable.
Even through the tough times, Love does conquer all & good friends mean everything.
Anyone with an interest in the history of Tasmania would enjoy this book. It tells of the degrees of hardship that the convicts sent from England, often for what we would call trivial reasons, had to endure. Often because of a nasty nature of the person I charge of them. These strong convicts survived or simply died more often from another's hand or whim. When looking at it, was it the right thing for England to do to send people on a trip in appalling conditions to eek out an existence?
